Sturgeon County Land Annexation

Welcome to the City

On February 23, 2022 the City of St. Albert held its “Welcome to the City” virtual event with Sturgeon annexation area residents and landowners. The event kicked off with an in-person welcome message from Mayor Heron followed by the presentation of information on transition topics, and wrapped up with a question and answer session. A panel of City department representatives were on hand to support discussions and provide additional details on the City’s available services and programs. Topics ranged from assessment and taxation to road maintenance and garbage disposal. Watch a recording of the event below.

 


Annexation Approved

The City of St. Albert’s application to annex 1558 hectares (3850 acres) of land from Sturgeon County was approved by the Provincial Government through an Order in Council on December 8, 2021.

Four years of collaborative partnership and negotiation between the two parties led to the City’s annexation application submission in December 2020. The Land and Property Rights Tribunal held its public hearing in April 2021, and made its recommendation to Cabinet.

Annexation Transition Handbook Cover February 22The City has prepared an Annexation Handbook to assist new residents from Sturgeon County who live in the annexation area and will be joining the City.

The City of St. Albert continues preparing for the transition of jurisdiction, which takes effect January 1, 2022.
