Background Information
St. Albert and Sturgeon County are Growing
To address these growth pressures, we embarked on an annexation process to enable sustainable long-term community planning, as well as providing certainty for residents, municipalities, developers and landowners in a manner consistent with the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Growth Plan. The annexation will provide enough land for the City's long-term residential and non-residential growth aspirations.
The City submitted its annexation application package to the Municipal Government Board (MGB) in December 2020. To view the Annexation Application Report see Updates & Documents
Memorandum of Agreement (MOA)
On February 28, 2017, Mayor Tom Flynn of Sturgeon County and Mayor Nolan Crouse of the City of St. Albert, along with members of their respective Councils, signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to begin negotiations on an adjustment to their common boundary.
The MOA sets in motion the formal process for the two municipalities to begin negotiations on the terms of a future annexation of land from Sturgeon County to the City of St. Albert. The MOA sets out the maximum amount of land that can be annexed and the collaborative approach that will be taken.
