Drone Permits
Know the requirements
All drone flights must follow the Canadian Aviation Regulations (SOR/96-433) and the regulations set by the City of St. Albert.
The City of St. Albert regulates drone use within parks and open spaces without a permit, per the Parks Bylaw (07/2022).
Parks and open spaces include:
- City-owned areas commonly used for public recreation.
- Natural areas, such as named parks, trail systems and environmental areas.
- Stormwater management facilities.
No Permit Required
- Microdrones (under 250g) can be operated within City of St. Albert parks with restrictions ↓
Permit Required
- Microdrone (under 250g)flights planned over advertised events or conservation parks (view restrictions ↓).
- Drone (250g-25kg) flights planned over any park/open space (view restrictions ↓).
Never Permitted
- Drones over 25kg
Restricted Areas
Advertised Events
Drones cannot operate over advertised public events without a Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC)from Transport Canada. In addition to all federal laws, regulations, and permits, the City requires a permit to fly a microdrone or drone over an advertised event.
Aquatic Amenities
Operation of any microdrone or drone is strictly prohibited over outdoor aquatic amenities such as outdoor pools and splash pads, regardless of weight.
Conservation Parks
Permits are required to operate drones over conservation parks, regardless of weight. The City designates conservation parks through the Land Use Bylaw, and the Land Use Bylaw Districting Map shows all currently designated areas.Related Pages
