Acreage & Farm Fire Permits
Types of Fires Permitted
The following fires will only be permitted on land parcels greater than one acre:
- Burn barrels and incinerators are permitted with an annual permit.
- Burn piles of permitted materials, less than 3.6 m x 3.6 m x 1.6 m high, may be burnt any time of year with the issuance of a permit.
- Large brush piles, windrow piles and structure fires are piles larger than 12'L x 12'W x 6'H. These types of fires are only permitted from December 1 - March 31, they require a site inspection from Emergency Services staff prior to a permit being issued. Permits are issued for 30 days or until March 31 and can be issued on-site.
Applying for a Fire Permit
The following process is for Brush, Brush Piles, Stubble, Windrows and Burning Barrels. Before starting this process, please review all the requirements and conditions for Acreage & Farm Fire Permits.
- Download and complete the Fire Permit Application Form
- Submit Fire Permit Application: Email your completed Fire Permit Application to firepermits@stalbert.ca
- Permit Application Review: A Fire Prevention Officer will review your application and may do an on-site inspection of the site.
- Permit Issued: Your fire permit number will be issued within five business days.
Requirements
- You must obtain a fire permit number and adhere to all permit conditions.
- Permits will only be issued for parcels greater than one acre.
- Fire Services must inspect the burn site before a permit is issued.
- No permits will be issued before December 1 or after March 31 for Brush Pile and Windrow Burns.
- Burning barrel permits must be renewed annually.
- Stubble or grass fire burns are generally prohibited and will only be issued at the utmost discretion of the Fire Prevention Officer with any additional conditions as deemed necessary.
- You must call your fire permit number into St. Albert Fire Services dispatch (780 459 7021) at the START of your burn and when it is EXTINGUISHED.
Note: Fire permits are void when a Fire Ban is declared.
Conditions
- Winds must be less than 15km per hour when burning.
- Sufficient tools, equipment and quantities of water readily available for the size of the burn being conducted.
- When burning in a burn barrel, barrel must be constructed of non-combustible material, free of damage, covered with a metal mesh screen with openings no more than 13mm, be located on a non-combustible base and be located at least 3 meters away from property lines or any combustibles.
- Take precautions to ensure the fire is attended to, and under control, at all times.
- You are responsible for conducting a fire that is safe.
- Smoke must not impair visibility on a roadway or highway.
- Consideration must be given to neighbours to avoid physical discomfort.
- Ensure your fire is completely extinguished.
