Tree Planting Partners

  • Application Process: Residents can apply to become a tree planting partner and plant trees on City Property (with the exception of boulevards).
  • Approvals: Planting must be approved by the City of St. Albert.
  • Commitment: Participants are required to join for a minimum of two years. During this time, maintenance of the tree(s)—including replacement if they fail in the first two years—will be the partner’s responsibility.
  • City Tree Inventory: Once planted, the tree(s) will be added to the City’s official tree inventory. However, after the two-year maintenance period, the City does not guarantee automatic replacement should the tree(s) fail, or the original homeowner moves away.
  • Planting Arrangements: Tree Planting Partners are responsible for coordinating the planting. This can be done through a contractor of the partner’s choice or done yourself as a community planting project with the guidance of a Partners in Parks Liaison.

FAQ'S

Why is approval required?

  • City approval is necessary to ensure that trees planted on City property are approved species, free of disease and insects, and placed in proper locations, sufficiently spaced to minimize present and future maintenance.
  • To ensure that the planting location is free from underground utilities, sight lines or property lines and is not in an area designated for future municipal development (utility installation, road widening etc.)

What is required as part of the approval process?

  • Description of planting (including species if known).
  • Submit a site plan showing the proposed location of planting(s). Note all plantings need to follow the current City Landscape Standards (Appendix d)
  • Request an in-person site meeting with the Program Coordinator between April and October.
  • If your project is part of a Community Planting Project, please include the name of the project.

What is the application process?

  • To become a Partner in Parks, you must review and complete the online orientation. Once you have completed the orientation, you will then be prompted to submit your registration form.
  • Once the request is submitted, the Program Coordinator will contact the applicant to confirm any details and to finalize participation.
  • As part of the process, the City notifies nearby affected residents/neighbours about the proposed planting.
  • Once approved, applicants will receive a letter of permission from the Partners in Parks Coordinator. A note on the property file is added to formalize the contribution and gives the opportunity to provide comment.
