What Can You Do for the River

The Sturgeon River showcases the natural beauty of the environment while providing a safe haven for many different types of wildlife, plants and algae and is a key part of St. Albert.

The City is committed to leaving the Sturgeon River in its natural state so that ecological processes are not disrupted.

How Can You Help the River

We encourage our residents and visitors to get to know the Sturgeon River and how we can all enjoy its peaceful tranquility for years to come. Here’s some simple ways you can help your river:

  • Minimize use of cosmetic herbicides and fertilizers.
  • Clean, drain and dry all aquatic gear, including life jackets, fishing gear, paddles, boats and wetsuits.
  • Do not release pets such as goldfish or other exotic animals into the river.
  • Volunteer for Weed Warrior events.
  • Minimize damage to the banks by using designated boat docks and fishing areas.
  • Keep fish wet – keep fish in the water when removing hooks for catch and release fishing.
  • Report any invasive species seen to Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, or the City’s Environment or Public Operations departments.
  • Use apps like EDDS Maps and iNaturalist to record sightings of invasive species, birds, plants and other wildlife.
  • Support the maintenance of riparian areas and wetlands in the City by showing support at public feedback sessions.
  • Minimize the excess use of water in your yard, and consider planting native vegetation or xeriscaping, or installing rain gardens.
  • Use rain barrels to collect rainfall.
  • Become involved in local naturalization efforts.
  • Pick up after your pets when out for a walk.
