Do You Have A Water Leak?

oWater bill high? Water leaks can be costly. Perform these simple tests to find out if you have a water leak in your home.

Test Your Toilet

A leaky toilet can waste more than 400 litres of water each day. Do a simple test to see if you are flushing your money away.

  • Drop a dye tablet (available at Utilities in City Hall) or some food colouring into your toilet tank.
  • Wait 15 minutes.
  • If the dye appears in your toilet bowl, you have a leak.
  • Look at the bottom of this page for some tips on how to fix a leak or hire a plumber.

To Repair

Toilet leaks are usually easy and inexpensive to repair. A local hardware store can help you by suggesting ways you can fix leaks or replace fixtures. Or call your local plumber.

  • Leaks usually occur in one of two places in your toilet tank, the flapper valve or overflow tubes.
  • Leaks at the flapper valve occur when it begins to wear out or if a slight amount of scale or corrosion is trapped under the valve seal.
  • Leaks can also flow silently into the overflow tube.
  • The water in most tanks should be at 25mm (1") below the overflow tube for best operation.

How to Conduct a Water Meter Test at Home

Performing a simple overnight water meter test will help determine if there is a leak.

Conducting the water meter test:

  • Find your water meter (pictured), which is located on your property. Most water meters are located in the basement, however, some are not.
  • Write down the numbers indicated on the meter at the start of the test. Do not use any water once the test has begun.
  • Return to check the meter reading the following morning.
  • If the numbers have not changed, you do not have a leak in your water system.
  • If the numbers have changed, something has used water on your property. Therefore, please refer to the toilet test at the top of this page to further troubleshoot the location of the leak.
