Emergency Management Branch

What is the City of St. Albert’s Emergency Management Branch?

  • If a major emergency or disaster happens in St. Albert, the City’s Emergency Management branch will lead the planning and coordination of the emergency response.
    • This includes working with City services, emergency responders, corporations, municipalities, not-for-profits, non-government organizations and other partners to respond to and recover from a disaster.
  • To ensure we’re ready to respond, the branch also leads mitigation and preparedness, and conducts regular training and exercises with City staff and other partners prior to any emergency occurring.

How Do You Help Those Affected by an Emergency?

  • The Emergency Management branch directs and supports the City’s Emergency Social Services program, which ensures the essential needs of evacuees are met during a large-scale emergency. This includes food, lodging, transportation and personal services.
  • Services are provided on a short-term basis to preserve the emotional and physical well-being of evacuees and response workers in emergency situations.
  • We also operate a Reception Centre for displaced or evacuated residents of our city or neighbouring communities.

Polices and Plans That We Follow

  • The City is ready to respond to any major emergency in alignment with the Province’s Emergency Management Act and Disaster Recovery Act.
    • The Emergency Management Act directs each community to establish an emergency management agency. This agency acts as the local authority to direct and control their response efforts under the Act.
  • The Local Authority Emergency Management Regulation provides direction to local authorities on their emergency management roles and responsibilities and what is required of municipalities to plan and prepare for the safety of their community.
  • St. Albert’s Community Emergency Management Plan (CEMP) outlines the structure and decision-making process that the City of St. Albert follows during major emergencies and disasters.
  • Information on the responsibilities and the parameters of the St. Albert Emergency Advisory Committee can be found in the City of St. Albert’s Emergency Management Bylaw (4/2020).
