Emergency Social Services
What is the City’s Emergency Social Services?
- The City has an Emergency Social Services (ESS) Plan and is prepared to provide emergency social services such as food, lodging, transportation and personal services for residents who are displaced from their home due to an emergency or incident in St. Albert.
- Emergency Social Services manages the human component of an emergency response.
How Does ESS Help Those Affected by an Emergency?
- During a major incident the City, under the direction of the Emergency Management branch, will establish a Reception Centre for people who have been displaced from their homes.
- All evacuees will be asked to register, so they can receive situational updates on the incident and information on available services and if applicable, financial supports. Evacuees can register in-person if they require supports or they can self-register through the My Alberta Emergency Registration System (MAERS).

- The Reception Centre is where evacuees can receive emergency social services for essential needs such as food, lodging, transportation and personal services.
- These services, provided by trained City staff and community volunteers, are for a short-term basis and help preserve the emotional and physical well-being of evacuees and response workers in emergency situations.
- Servus Credit Union Place, 400 Campbell Road, is the designated site for the Reception Centre unless impacted by the incident. If that is the case, other sites are available.
Did You Know - Insurance
- If residents have to leave their homes because of an evacuation order issued by civil authorities, most homeowner’s and tenant’s insurance policies will provide coverage for reasonable additional living expenses for a specified period of time.
- If you’ve been displaced/evacuated, keep the receipts for your living expenses, such as hotel accommodations and anything else over and above normal living expenses. Ask your insurance representative what living expenses you’re entitled to and for what period of time.
- Coverage typically starts on the date of evacuation.
- Your insurance representative can clarify the details of your policy.
