What is the status of the Campbell Road Park and Ride?
The future Campbell Road Park and Ride Transit Centre is a priority project for St. Albert Transit. It has been in the development stage since 2009. In 2015, the City of St. Albert obtained necessary grant funding from the Province of Alberta's "Green Trip" incentive program, which allowed this project to proceed.
The proposed Campbell Road Park and Ride Transit Centre will be an 800-stall parking lot and transit station that will serve as St. Albert Transit's principal transfer and operation station.
All arrangements for the transfer and purchase of the land have been completed. Final possession took place on September 1, 2017.
In the spring of 2017, Associated Engineering was awarded the contract for the engineering, design and construction of the facility. Preliminary plans have been drawn up and are being assessed and modified.
Construction is slated to begin in May of 2019 with site clearing and preliminary utility, roadway, and drainage improvements. The opening is targeted for September of 2020.
What will the facility include, and how much will it cost?
The new Campbell Road Park and Ride Transit Centre will accommodate 800 vehicles on 500 paved stalls and 300 gravel stalls. Parking capacity is expandable to 1,600 spaces.
The transit station will have the capacity for 16 buses, and this is expandable to 24. The station is also the proposed future terminus of Edmonton's Northwest LRT line.
The project is a $30 million investment, with $20 million provided by "Green Trip" grant funding and $10 million by the City of St. Albert through Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) funding.
The site will include a transit centre building, separate public and driver washroom facilities, bicycle storage facilities, disabled parking, and an area called a “Kiss & Ride” which will allow for dropping off and picking up of commuters.

Why does the City want to build this Park and Ride?
Enhancing public transportation options for transit riders is critical to meet the short and long-term needs of residents.
The development of the Campbell Road Park and Ride Transit Centre will meet short-term goals by replacing the existing Village Transit Station at Village Landing, which can no longer meet the parking demands.
It is also integral to the long-term vision of bringing Light Rail Transit (LRT) to St. Albert, as the Campbell Road Park and Ride Transit Centre will be integrated into the City of Edmonton’s plan for an LRT terminus station when Edmonton extends the LRT from NAIT.
By developing the Campbell Road Park and Ride Transit Centre as a public transportation hub, it will facilitate quick and easy movement between St. Albert, Edmonton and the rest of the Capital Region. It will provide room to grow over the next 30 years, positioning our City as an economically vibrant community.
Where will the facility be located?
It will be located on a parcel of land east of St. Albert Trail and west of Campbell Road (kitty-corner to City Ford). Download a map of the location. Due to the large area of land required for the Campbell Road Park and Ride Transit Centre, and to remain close to the principal transportation corridor between St. Albert and Edmonton, the best parcel of land was this site, which is within the boundaries of the City of Edmonton.
What are the steps that need to be taken for the project to move ahead?
Now that the land purchase has been finalized and an engineering consultant chosen, the next phase will be the development of a detailed plan and land preparation in terms of clearing, drainage, and roadway modifications.
What other initiatives are underway with the City of Edmonton?
Wetland study, drainage study, traffic impact assessment, rezoning process and other related studies are being conducted in accordance with the City of Edmonton's requirements for the development of the site.
Who will this new facility benefit? What is the projected growth?
Current and potential park and ride commuters, mainly from St. Albert but also from Sturgeon County, Morinville, and parts of northern Edmonton.
Current and potential transit riders as this new transit centre will be the principal transfer point between local and commuter bus routes. It will provide greater capacity for passengers wishing to utilize the park and ride. The existing Village Transit Station lot is currently unable to meet the demand for parking, and this demand will only grow in the future. The new facility is designed to meet current and future demands.
The City of St. Albert, as it will position St. Albert Transit to grow ridership by improving the transit experience and making transit a convenient and viable alternative to the automobile in both the short and long term. Long term consideration involves inclusion in the LRT network as the terminus for the Metro LRT Line.
What will be the name of the facility?
Currently, the project will be referred to as the Campbell Road Park and Ride Transit Station. Possible renaming of the facility has yet to be confirmed.
