Neighbourhood Connection Grant

The Neighbourhood Connection grant is an opportunity for St. Albert residents to create further connection with their neighbours. You could be eligible for up to $500 for your expenses. This grant program is for reimbursable expenses and operates on a first come, first served basis for neighbourhood-focused gatherings and activities.

Application Intake Details

Annual intake for applications begins on April 1 and runs until October 31.

Frequently Ask Questions

Can City of St. Albert employees apply for Neighbourhood Connection Grant? 

Yes. City of St. Albert employees who meet all other application requirements are encouraged to apply. Community Services staff are not eligible.

Can youth apply for a Neighbourhood Connection Grant? 

Yes. A youth can be the leader of the initiative, however, an individual over eighteen years old is responsible for signing the application, receiving the grants, keeping all receipts, and reporting on the event.

Can each unit in a condo or apartment building apply for a Neighbourhood Connection Grant?

Yes. One application per event is permitted. However, if there is a large concentration of applicants from one area, The City of St. Albert reserves the right to limit the approved applications in order to ensure that all areas of the city have a fair opportunity for grant funding.

Can Neighbourhood Connection Grants be used to host or organize a fundraising event?

No. This grant cannot be used for fundraising events or to host charity walks or runs.

Can residents apply for a Neighbourhood Connection Grant AND a Community Events Grant or other City of St. Albert grant for the same event?

No. The City of St. Albert does not allow for multiple granting streams within the City to be allocated to the same event/project/activity.

Am I guaranteed to receive a $500 Grant? 

No. All eligible applications will be reviewed with a final funding amount allocated based on merit. The approved funding will be communicated to the applicant.

Are matching dollars required?

No. Grants are intended to supplement costs and ease financial barriers when building strong neighbourhood connections.

Can an applicant make money (and keep it) during the project or activity?

No. You cannot make money through the Grant. Grant dollars will not support private gain or be used as a fundraiser for other projects.

Can the money be used for capital items?

No. You cannot use the money to purchase capital items such as office furniture, park furniture, facility maintenance, etc.

Can we hold our event / activity in the neighbourhood park?

Yes, but will require permission and possibly a special event permit.

Eligible Applicants

  • Applicants must be residents of St. Albert.
  • A minimum of TWO people (not from the same household) must apply together as one applicant. 
    • The recipient receiving the funding must be over 18 years old and will be responsible for signing the application, receiving the funds and completing final reporting.
  • Eligible applicants include groups of individual citizens, and formal or informal community groups.
  • Applicants must have no outstanding grant reports due to the City of St. Albert.
  • Businesses are not eligible for funding.

Eligible Events/Activities

  • The activity or event must be held in St. Albert.
  • Only one application per event will be approved. Events in the same neighbourhood are encouraged to share resources and work together.
  • Events or applicants that are primarily mandated with a recreation or sports focus do not qualify.
  • Funding is provided to supplement a diverse range of small neighbourhood-focused gatherings and activities.
  • The event or activity must take place between June 1 - December 31 of the year in which the grant funds were awarded.
  • When possible, organizers are encouraged to support local businesses and purchase supplies in St. Albert.
  • Grant funds must be used for a public purpose and may not support or promote political activities, private interests, advocacy or proselytizing.

Funding Details

  • Maximum grant allocation is up to $500 per event.
  • Grant is provided as one time funding, with no on-going funding options for this grant program.
  • Funding will not be approved for events that have already occurred. 
  • A final report is required upon completion of your event or activity.  A form will be provided.
  • As the City of St. Albert is not the organizer of the event or activity, it is not appropriate to feature the City of St. Albert’s logo on event-related material. Grant recipients are encouraged to use the phrase “funded in part by a City of St. Albert Neighbourhood Connection Grant”.
  • All activities/events supported by this grant must follow local health and safety requirements.
  • Grant funding allocated to an applicant which has not been used by December 31 of the grant year must be returned to the City. 

Preparing your Application

Gather all additional information required prior to applying. Key pieces of additional information which must be provided in your application:

  • Planned Date and time of the Event / Activity.
  • Address and Neighbourhood where the Event / Activity will take place.
  • Description of the proposed Event or Activity.
  • Details of how the Event / Activity will enhance community life.
  • Applicant Name, Address, phone number and e-mail address.  This information is required for both applicants.
  • A list of expenses which you would be spending the grant funding on.
  • If applicable, a copy of the letter/e-mail/permit granting permission to hold the event or activity on public land (ie park, playground, street, etc).

  2. Prior to applying, please gather all additional information required. Key pieces of additional information which will be requested once you submit your application may include:
    • Date, time and location of event/activity.
    • Description of event/activity.
    • A list of anticipated expenses.
    • If applicable, a copy of the letter/e-mail/permit granting permission to hold the event or activity on public land (ie park, playground, street, etc)
  3. After you've confirmed your eligibility and have all the necessary documents ready and saved as pdf’s, you may start your application.

Note: After submitting your online application, you will receive an e-mail response that will provide directions for sending in the additional information noted above. Once you've completed this, your application will be reviewed by staff and additional follow-up will occur if necessary.
