Environmental StewardshipThe indicators in this section relate to the City’s efforts to maintain a healthy and sustainable environment.Section IndicatorsResidential WasteWaste TonnageLandfill DiversionWater ConsumptionResidential Waste Per CapitaThe indicator shows the amount of waste (organic, recycling and garbage) created by St. Albert residents per annum in kilograms.Reporting frequency: Annually Last updated: 2025 View fullscreenCommentsResidential waste per capita increased to 424 kg per resident in 2025, compared with 391 kg per resident in 2024. Garbage per capita remained relatively consistent with 2024 levels, while recycling per capita increased modestly, which may reflect changes to accepted materials under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program. Organics per capita increased in 2025, largely due to the inclusion of branches collected at the Compost Yard, which were not captured in previous years due to data limitations.Return to Indicators ↑Waste TonnageThe indicator shows the amount of waste that is being created by residents per annum. This indicator is tied to population growth and the overall waste habits of residents.Reporting frequency: Annually Last updated: 2025 View fullscreenCommentsThe City collected 23,990 tonnes of total waste in 2025, an increase from 21,770 tonnes in 2024, despite only a modest population increase. Garbage tonnage remained relatively consistent with 2024 levels. Recycling tonnage increased by 6 per cent, which may reflect changes to accepted materials under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program. Organics tonnage increased significantly in 2025, largely due to the inclusion of branches collected at the Compost Yard, which were not captured in previous years due to data limitations.Return to Indicators ↑Landfill Diversion RateThe indicator shows the amount of waste diverted from the landfill by various recycling and composting processes. It is expressed as the amount of waste diverted as a percentage of the total waste collected.Reporting frequency: Annually Last updated: 2025 View fullscreenCommentsSt. Albert residents diverted 54.91 per cent of total waste collected from the landfill in 2025, an increase from 50.72 per cent in 2024. This improvement reflects the continued success of waste diversion initiatives, including incentives to reduce garbage bin sizes and disincentives for larger or additional bins. The increase was also influenced by the inclusion of branch material collected at the Compost Yard beginning in 2025, which had not been captured in previous years due to data limitations.Return to Indicators ↑Water Consumption Per CapitaThe indicator measures the city's water consumption per capita per day. The water consumption value combines residential, industrial, commercial and institutional uses. The target to be achieved is 200 litres/capita/day.Reporting frequency: Annually Last updated: 2025 View fullscreenCommentsComposite water consumption in 2025 was 219.1 litres per capita per day, a slight increase from 216.8 litres per capita per day in 2024. While consumption remains above the City’s 200 litres per capita per day target, overall water use has declined substantially from earlier years, reflecting continued improvements in water conservation practices. The amended Water Conservation Bylaw, implemented in June 2023 and in effect year-round, supports ongoing efforts to reduce water consumption across the community.Return to Indicators ↑Related Pages Environment › Garbage, Organics & Recycling › Utilities ›Last edited: March 19, 2026Return to the top ↑City Hall & News › City Administration ›Universal Accessibility ›Grants ›Human Resources & Safety ›Long-Term Plans ›Satisfaction Surveys ›StATracker ›Business & Financial Management ›Community Amenities ›Community Development ›Employee Development & Safety ›Environmental StewardshipLand Use & Development ›Movement of Goods & People ›Public Safety ›St. Albert Facts ›
