Residential Waste Per Capita

The indicator shows the amount of waste (organic, recycling and garbage) created by St. Albert residents per annum in kilograms.

Comments

Waste disposed per capita (garbage/capita) had increased in 2024 and remained close to 2022 parameters.

Total waste per capita in 2024 (342 kg/capita) is below the last available national average (2022), which was 403 kg/capita.

Waste Tonnage

The indicator shows the amount of waste that is being created by residents per annum. This indicator is tied to population growth and the overall waste habits of residents.

Comments

Despite population growth, the total waste generated by residents of St. Albert decreased each year from 2020 to 2023 and remained below the 2021 levels in 2024, even with a population nearly three per cent larger than in 2021.

Landfill Diversion Rate

The indicator shows the amount of waste diverted from the landfill by various recycling and composting processes. It is expressed as the amount of waste diverted as a percentage of the total waste collected.

Comments

In 2024, St. Albert residents diverted around 50 per cent of the total waste generated, which is the same level as 2021 and 2022 and four per cent less than 2023.

The national average for 2022 (the last available year) was below 32 per cent.

Water Consumption Per Capita

The indicator measures the city's water consumption per capita per day. The water consumption value combines residential, industrial, commercial and institutional uses.The target to be achieved is 200 litres/capita/day.

Comments

In June 2023, the City implemented the amended Water Conservation Bylaw, which is in effect year-round, to promote water conservation.
