The percentage of adults has remained relatively stable, while mature adults have slightly declined. School-age children have continued their long-term decrease but have remained relatively stable since 2012. Young adults have also gradually declined, and seniors have grown significantly, surpassing all other age groups. The percentage of infants and toddlers remains the smallest, following a long-term decline but stabilizing in recent years.

Average Population Growth

The indicator measures the average annual population growth between census years.

The most recent data shows a growth rate of 1.51 per cent in 2024, indicating a continued upward trend compared to the previous census period, which held steady at 1.1 per cent annually. The most recent increase in 2024 suggests a renewed period of growth.

Local Employment as a Percent of Population

The indicator shows the number of residents employed locally, as a percentage of the total population.

Comments

After reaching 19.4 per cent in 2008, the local employment rate saw variations, dropping to 18.28 per cent in 2010, before rebounding to 19.67 per cent in 2014. Between 2016 and 2018, local employment declined from 19.38 per cent to 17.41 per cent. By 2024, the percentage had slightly recovered to 18.1 per cent.

Note: The 2018 Census included a unique question regarding second job locations, which may have impacted the comparability of results with previous years.

Living and Employed in St. Albert

The indicator shows the number of St. Albert residents who are employed locally, in St. Albert.

Between 2016 and 2018, there was a decline in the number of residents employed full-time and part-time from 12,526 to 11,508, representing an 8.1 per cent decrease. However, by 2024, employment levels rebounded to 13,095, reflecting a 13.8 per cent increase from 2018 and surpassing pre-2018 levels.

Note: The 2018 Census recorded a population of 11,508, but a unique question about second job locations may have affected comparability with prior years. A total of 1,618 jobs in St. Albert were classified as second jobs.

St. Albert’s living wage was $21.75 for 2024, a decrease from $23.80 in 2023. The decrease is due to lower electricity rates and changes to the Affordability Grant, resulting in lower daycare costs.
