Indicators

Landfill Diversion Rate

This indicator shows the amount of waste diverted from the landfill by various recycling processes. It is expressed as the amount of waste diverted as a percentage of the total waste collected by the City of St. Albert.

Reporting frequency: Annually     Last updated: 2019

Comments

The diversion rate may have been impacted after the Blue Recycling Bag program changes were launched on November 1, 2018. Bags with unacceptable materials were not collected, and residents had to re-sort the items into the garbage or organics. Packaging from household items is commonly getting lighter and made of non-recyclable materials (e.g. coffee pods, plastic pouches, etc.). These items were not common in 2011/2012 when waste diversion metrics were being tracked.

Waste Tonnage

This indicator shows the amount of waste that is being created by St. Albert residents per annum. This indicator is tied to population growth and the overall waste habits of residents.

Reporting frequency: Annually     Last updated: 2018

Comments

Electronics weight is decreasing as devices are becoming smaller, thinner and lighter. Many heavier electronics (e.g. old tube televisions) are no longer in circulation and have already been recycled. Garbage weight was higher than in previous years. This change may be associated with the items no longer accepted in the curbside recycling program and entering the garbage stream instead. Staff will continue to educate residents on proper waste sorting. Organics' weight was less than in previous years. This decrease may be impacted by the growing season. Staff will continue to educate residents on proper waste sorting by encouraging residents to place items such as napkins, shredded paper and tissues in the organics rather than the recycling. Recycling weight may have been impacted due to the recycling changes implemented on November 1, 2018. However, recycling is now cleaner, with less contamination. Staff will continue to educate residents on proper waste sorting.
