Celebrating the Arts

The 8th Annual Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts Awards was held on March 9 at the Enjoy Centre. It was the last year Mayor Nolan Crouse would hand out awards to our local artists and he began by reciting a poem for the attendees.

An excerpt from Mayor Crouse’s poem:

To each of you
Who loves something unique
Art is about you
In whatever form you do seek.

The event also hosted a silent auction featuring community designed lanterns. Three St. Albert artists had the task of creating the lanterns, which were a hit among the evening’s attendees. Samantha Williams-Chapelsky, Katherine Hutton and Shelby Johnson each designed one lantern for the Illumination theme.  The proceeds from the auction will go towards funding the Excellence in Arts Teaching award for 2018.

Awards were presented throughout the evening for youth, emerging and established artists as well as arts leadership, teaching and community arts group. All award winners received a $1,000 cash prize and a painting created by Samantha Williams-Chapelsky.

The highlight of the evening for many was watching Michael Massey, a pianist, conductor, programmer, teacher and orchestrator, receive his Lifetime Achievement Award. Massey accepted his award graciously, quoting Plato in his thank-you speech. Massey will be inducted into the St. Albert Cultural Wall of Fame.
