Celebrating the Slash
St. Albert is a community known for its focus on active, healthy living. The City prides itself on its outdoor accessibility, recreation centres, and its love of all things active. With trails, gardens, swimming pools, and skating rinks, the City of St. Albert thrives with a lively community of engaged and active residents. St. Albert takes pride in its promotion of healthy lifestyles and sport participation, which is why on June 10, 2019 City Council honoured the members of the St. Albert Slash with a Certificate of Recognition. The team posed for a photo with the City Councillors and Mayor Heron after having brought championship ‘3-peat’ t-shirts to share with Council.
This past April, the Slash returned to St. Albert from the 2019 Esso Cup as three-time National Champions and Council acknowledged their accomplishments by commending the young women and their coaching team on a job well done. The Midget AAA women’s team beat the Sudbury Lady Wolves 4-1 in the Championship Game on April 27 in Sudbury, Ontario. This win gave the team their third-consecutive Esso Cup championship. They are the first team to win more than one national title, let alone back-to-back-to-back wins, in the 11-year history of the tournament. To accomplish this is an incredible achievement and the City of St. Albert is extremely proud of the team.
Since their win, the St. Albert Slash members have experienced some celebrity status around town. They have been showing off their gold medals at reading sessions with children in local schools, walking in the Rain Maker Rodeo Parade and attending galas. Many of the women are moving on to post-secondary schooling this fall and have secured spots on new competitive teams for the coming hockey season.
