Changing Tides for Poet Laureate, Zach Polis

Zach Polis became St. Albert’s Poet Laureate, a position that was created to support the development of a robust cultural and literary community, in 2018. The role, the first of its kind in St. Albert, has been a collaboration between the City of St. Albert and the St. Albert Public Library in an effort to champion literary and cultural development within the community.

In April, Zach’s term as Poet Laureate comes to a close. Through his time in the role, Zach has championed poetry within St. Albert, which has led to a growing and increasingly vibrant poetry community. Zach’s fun and charming style has consistently sparked new life into fans of poetry who might have long ago abandoned the genre, while simultaneously creating a new generation of poetry lovers.

Not only did his poetry surprise and delight patrons at events and programs over the last two years, but he also helped residents take time to reflect on change—connecting changes in the life of the city to the personal changes we all have experienced in our own lives. His resume throughout his time as Poet Laureate is robust; from being shortlisted as a nominee performance at the Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts to hosting the Youth Poetry Ball at the St. Albert Public Library, Zach has immersed himself in the community and demonstrated his passion for the positive outcomes the program has brought to his life. In fact, Zach directly credits being the City’s first Poet Laureate with helping him reach new heights, including being short-listed for Alberta’s First Artist in Residence program and for being accepted into the Banff Centre for the Arts and Creativity Spoken Word Residency.

As Zach closes this chapter of his life, the City of St. Albert looks to the future. The next Poet Laureate will be recruited to serve a two-year term as the literary and cultural ambassador of the City of St. Albert. We keenly look ahead to see what the next term holds for our city and thank Zach for his energy and dedication throughout his time with us.
