Dig In St. Albert!
The first week of May brought foodies from around the region to St. Albert to take part in the City of St. Albert’s fifth annual Dig In Horticulinary Festival, in partnership with Hole’s Greenhouses and proudly presented by Averton. Some festivities took place at the Enjoy Centre. With 1850 tickets sold, participants enjoyed a range of activities, including interactive programs, activities showcasing the value of sourcing local products, growing their own foods, and celebrating the food and horticulture of the St. Albert region.
This year’s celebrity chef was Mary Berg, former MasterChef winner. She brought her fun-loving personality to St. Albert, hosting a multi-course, interactive dinner featuring locally sourced ingredients. A highlight from the dinner was her beef tenderloin, and the apple and beet borsht served cold.
Again this year, the event featured two culinary tours, including the favourite Culinary Bike Tour and Culinary Walking Tour, both of which sold out. And of course, the hands-on Make & Take workshops made a come back - the line up included bread making, cheese making, bee hotels and more.
Favourites from the Averton Mainstage included Cooking with Mary Berg, Baking Red Velvet Cupcakes with Kids Baking Champion contestant Alex Czajka, and Jim Hole’s demonstration of edible flowers.
A new feature this year was Dig In Dining Week. Four local restaurants participated by creating a special Dig In Feature sourced from local ingredients. The restaurants were Appetite Global Cuisine, Ohana Ya, Riverbank Bistro and Glasshouse Bistro. Thanks to everyone who supported these participating restaurants.
The festival will be back in the spring of 2019. Stay tuned.
