The Behaviour of Your Dog Is Your Responsibility
Being a responsible dog owner means not only taking care of your pet’s health and well-being, but also following City guidelines and being respectful of others in our community.
Spring is here and that means longer days to play outside with your pup! As more dog owners and their fur-legged friends head out to designated off-leash areas for play time, it’s important to remember a few things.
We’ve highlighted some key details below that you might not have known!
St. Albert is fortunate to have many designated off-leash areas, which include dog parks, sites and outdoor boarded rinks. These are great places for dogs and their owners to meet, exercise and socialize.
To ensure St. Albert’s shared outdoor spaces are safe and comfortable for all, guidelines need to be followed as per the Animal Bylaw 11/2013.
- St. Albert is an on-leash community, unless in one of the City’s two dog parks or other designated off-leash areas. This means all dogs must be leashed on or within one metre of trails, including trails in an off-leash area. Owners or walkers must always carry a leash, even in off-leash areas.
- A dog must always be under complete control, even in an off-leash area. This means your dog’s recall must be good enough to prevent unwanted contact with others.
- Stop & scoop! Owners must pick up poop immediately and always carry a means of picking up after their dog. Carry multiple bags to make sure you always meet this requirement. This isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the law!
- Dogs are prohibited from being in playground areas even when on a leash.
- All areas are on-leash when organized sporting activities are taking place.
Remember that not everyone is comfortable around dogs. Off-leash activities should be limited to the designated areas.
Off-Leash Area Locations
Not sure what type of designated off-leash area is right for you or are you curious about where a designated area begins and ends? We’ve got you covered!
On our website you can learn about the three different types of off-leash areas - dog parks, sites and boarded rinks - and view a collection of maps that show the individual off-leash area boundaries. A quick reminder that when entering or leaving the boundaries of an off-leash area, all dogs must be on a leash.
We also have a handy overview map that shows every location in the City, which you can view, download or print. Depending on where you live, there might be one within walking distance of your home!
