Downtown Banners: A Vibrant Showcase of Diversity and Inclusion

The City of St. Albert is thrilled to announce the newest addition to St. Albert’s public art collection! The City put out a call for artists in Fall of 2024 and three artists were chosen to create artwork to be displayed as banners on downtown light posts on Perron Street, St. Thomas Street, St. Michael Street and St. Anne Street. The temporary artwork will be in place for up to three years. These banners will enhance downtown’s vibrancy, support local artists and speak to the City’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Artists and Banner Artwork

Eunju Park Banners

You Are Beautiful | 넌 아름다워, You Are Doing Good | 잘하고 있어, Be Yourself | 너답게, You Shine as You Are | 너 자체로 빛나
Hanji (Traditional Korean Paper)
Korean Letter Abstract Collage

Artist: Eunju Park

"I am a Letter Abstract Collage Artist, originally from South Korea. My work centers on Hanji, a traditional Korean paper known for its exceptional quality and durability. I manipulate and tear Hanji to create expressive forms of Hangul, the Korean alphabet, embedding positive meanings such as "You Are Worthy and Beautiful," "You Shine Brighter than Anyone," "I Believe in Myself," and "I Can Do It." This process is not only a reflection of my cultural heritage, but also a means to convey messages of hope, joy and self-affirmation.

After living in St. Albert for over a decade, I felt a sense of disconnection from my heritage. Turning to Hanji in my art allowed me to reconnect with my roots, inspired by its durability and historical significance. My journey in art began amidst personal challenges, where the crafting of Hanji and uplifting messages became a therapeutic outlet. My goal is to spread positivity and share my culture through my artwork, showcasing the beauty of Korean culture and the power of self-belief."

Artist: Jasper June

“I am a queer, non-binary, disabled multidisciplinary artist living in Treaty 6 Territory. My artwork explores queer ecology, nature conservation and disability justice. I believe art can be a powerful tool for change by challenging oppression and inspiring action. My art is informed by my lived experiences and has been an important avenue for my healing, storytelling, joy, rest, resistance, connection and expression.”

Melanie Hsiao Banners

Abundance, The Healing – Kâkesimokamik, Children are our Future, Return to Nature
Acrylic painting with real flowers and leaves.

Artist: Melanie Hsiao

Alberta's landscape, wildlife and vegetation inspire the artist's work. Mastering and working with colours is Melanie's strong suit. Many of her pieces depict the depth of a complicated natural environment. At the same time, however, her art also conveys a delightful and inspirational moment. Combining painting and pressed flowers within her body of work is Melanie’s signatures style.

Public Art in St. Albert

St. Albert is committed to building a diverse Public Art collection that contributes to our community’s sense of belonging, wellbeing and wonder. The City of St. Albert believes that art can directly influence the way that people see and connect with each other and their community. With our growing collection, the City seeks to activate public spaces while fostering a collective understanding and appreciation of the vital role artists play in enriching society and culture.

Another Call for Artists

The City of St. Albert invites artists and artist collectives to submit qualifications for a public art project located in the community of Erin Ridge North’s newest park, Element Park. The successful artist or artist team will be contracted to create an exterior mosaic to be embedded on the blank side of an outdoor bouldering wall. The wall serves as a dynamic feature within the park, designed to captivate both locals and visitors, drawing them in for a wide range of engaging park experiences.

This opportunity is open to artists and artist collectives who currently reside anywhere in Canada. Qualified artists will have proven experience developing artwork specifically for civic projects. Those considering applying should note that any travel and accommodation expenses will come out of the overall artist budget.
