Are You Thinking About Running as a Candidate in the 2025 Municipal Election?
Take your passion for your community to the next level ─ run as a candidate in the 2025 St. Albert Municipal Election! The next election takes place on Monday, October 20, 2025. Candidates can seek positions as Mayor, City Councillor, Public School Trustee and Catholic School Trustee.

Before the end of 2024, the site will be updated to include the 2025 Candidate Handbook, which includes the required nomination information. In the new year, the site will be updated to include candidate information session details, a list of the voting locations, advance voting information and more.
Information for Prospective Candidates
If you are interested in running in the upcoming municipal election, candidate information can be found under the Information for Candidates page on the City website. Please note that beginning with the next term, City Council positions will be full-time positions.

Updated Local Authorities Election Act
The Province has passed the Municipal Affairs Statutes Amendment Act, 2024 which makes changes to two pieces of municipal-related legislation: the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA) and the Municipal Government Act (MGA).The LAEA governs municipal and school division elections in Alberta. In 2024 there were several changes announced that include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Notice of intent requirement and Register of Candidates
- Permanent Electors Register
- Prohibition of electronic voting equipment
- Third party advertising restrictions have changed. No individual, corporation, trade union or employee organization shall make advertising contributions to any third party during an election advertising period that exceed, in the aggregate, $5,000.00. (The amount prior to this amendment was $30,000).
Candidates and third-party advertisers are responsible to ensure their compliance with the legislation.
Candidate Notice of Intent
New for the 2025 Municipal Election, candidates must submit a notice of intent to run in the St. Albert Municipal Election if they intend to accept contributions or incur campaign expenses. Candidates can only accept campaign contributions and incur campaign expenses after their notice of intent is complete and they are added to the Register of Candidates. A notice of intent can be submitted any time during the campaign period, which started on October 31, 2024 and runs until December 31, 2025.
Nomination Period
For the 2025 Municipal Election, the nomination period will run January 1, 2025 to September 22, 2025. More nomination information will soon be added to the Information for Candidates page.
Candidates are encouraged to review the eligibility criteria in the Local Authorities Election Act prior to submitting a notice of intent. Being added to the Register of Candidates is not a substitute for completing the nomination process.

- Candidate Notice of Intent Submissions: October 31, 2024 to December 31, 2025
- Candidate Nomination Period: January 1, 2025 to September 22, 2025
- 2024 Campaign Disclosure Statement Deadline: March 1, 2025
- Candidate Information Sessions: Spring 2025 (dates to be announced)
- Close of Nominations (Nomination Day): September 22, 2025 (nominations close by noon)
- Advance Vote: October 14, 2025 to October 18, 2025
- Election Day: October 20, 2025
