A Tribute to Fallen Firefighters

Each year, many events are held across North America to pay tribute to fallen firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Although firefighters undergo extensive training to minimize dangers and there are safety protocols and equipment in place to do their jobs safely, sometimes firefighters experience injuries, illness or even death in the line of duty.

Recently, members from the St. Albert Fire Services’ team attended the Canadian Firefighters Memorial event in Ottawa (September 2024) and the Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial event in Colorado (September 2023) to pay tribute to Warren Hillier who was a St. Albert Fire Services member. These events were attended by family, members of the local fire union and honour guard along with fire services from across North America. At these events, Warren’s contribution to firefighting was recognized and his name was added to these memorials.

Events like these recognize the important roles firefighters play in keeping communities safe and being there for others during emergency situations 24/7. These events also highlight the importance of supporting one another during difficult times and mental health initiatives.

“St. Albert Fire Services is dedicated to providing mental health and safe workplace programs to support members when facing difficult situations and traumatic events,” says Leigh Sawicki, Deputy Chief, Operations, Emergency Services. “Having specialized programming in place throughout the year to support responders is making a difference in how we deal with difficult events we face.”

As a City, we recognize all fallen firefighters for their duty and dedication to their careers.
