Business Licensing Gets Even Faster with MyCity

Doing business in St. Albert has gotten easier with the expansion of business licensing applications and renewals into the MyCity online tool in 2020.

MyCity was first introduced to St. Albert residents in 2018 and it allows users to manage their dog and business licenses, review their assessment/taxation and utility records, and also register for e-billing. To do business in St. Albert, all business owners must hold a current Business License. To make this process simpler, the MyCity tool walks users through the form step-by-step. Users can even submit supporting documents, update their contact information and make payments online.

Since the move to online applications, the City has seen e-billing enrolment for business licensing rise from 95 accounts in 2018 to 1016 accounts in 2020. Currently, in 2021, over half of all licensed businesses are enrolled for e-billing. Feedback from business owners about the online process has been positive, with many users commenting about the convenience of logging in online rather than stopping by City Hall to submit the forms in person.

With the streamlined online process, many new business license applications are approved in as little as one day. These quick approvals are possible when the application meets all municipal requirements and the supporting documents are submitted electronically. Since the process is largely automated, applicants find out instantaneously via email when the Business Licensing staff has reviewed their application and issued the business license. However, if an application is missing information, a member of the business license team will contact the applicant to chat about the issues.

The business licensing team also offers local entrepreneurs help in navigating the license requirements from the Province and Alberta Health Services. Depending on the business type, different forms must be submitted, and processes approved before the business can open in St. Albert. These forms and processes can feel intimidating, but the City's business license team are experts who are willing to give advice to all prospective business owners.

If you are looking into starting a business in St. Albert or have questions about the business licensing process, contact the Business Licensing team by email licensing@stalbert.ca or by phone at 780-459-1618.
