Free Car Seat Checks

Your car seat is one of the most crucial pieces of safety equipment you’ll ever own. After all, you’re putting your most precious cargo in it. But is it installed correctly?

“Whenever I’ve been involved in a check stop, I’ve found that the majority of car seats in St. Albert are installed incorrectly,” says Peace Officer Chris Lavallee of St. Albert Municipal Enforcement Services. “The corrections are easy to make, but half of the battle is knowing what to correct.”

To give parents peace-of-mind, Peace Officer Lavallee is offering free car seat checks to residents. As a certified car seat technician, he’ll provide guidance on the proper installation of car seats, booster seats and infant seats. He’ll check your installed car seat, help you fix any mistakes, and teach you how to properly install it.

“Using a car seat properly will reduce the likelihood of a child being injured or killed in a crash by as much as 71 per cent,” says Peace Office Lavallee. “But it has to be installed correctly.”

Common Mistakes:

  • Seat not tightly secured to the vehicle (moves more than 2.5 cm in any direction)
  • Position of the shoulder straps
  • Harness not snug
