Fire Crews Get a Helping Hand
Hayden Manderscheid has always been interested in fire stations, from the trucks and how they work, to the firefighters who run them when they go out into our community.
“He loves all the safety aspects of the trucks - the tools, ladders, radio for dispatch, and the sirens,” says Hayden’s mom Amy. “Hayden has paid particular attention to the fire truck sirens and can name most of the different types and why they use them. He loves the crew, and Hayden knows that they have such an important role in helping people and says they are heroes.”
Since March 2024, Hayden’s been taking part in a work experience program arranged by his high school at Fire Hall 3.
“When Hayden is at the fire station, he attends with his wonderful community support person and Hayden helps to wash the fire trucks, mops the floor, blows off the driveway and interacts with the firefighters bringing comradery among those at the fire station! We have been given feedback that Hayden is very well liked at the hall, and they love having him there,” adds Amy. “He always leaves with the biggest smile and is proud of his efforts. We have seen tremendous growth in Hayden since he has been given this opportunity. He knows that this is an important role and takes it very seriously. We’re so grateful that the fire hall has been so welcoming and supportive.”

The crew at the hall are happy to work with Hayden as well and his presence can’t help but make others smile.
“One particular day, the trucks were literally spotless and there wasn’t much to do. So the guys brought him into the weight room with them and had him do a workout. He had so much fun lifting weights with the guys,” says Damien Maas, fire fighter at Fire Hall 3.
When he’s not at the fire hall once a week, or in school, Hayden also enjoys playing different types of sports with the Special Olympics like bowling, swimming, track and field and basketball. He even had a recent opportunity to speak at the Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics. He has a personal interest in fitness and knows the importance of a healthy lifestyle and staying active. Hayden also loves music, plays the drums and guitar and has performed in many a talent show over the years.
“I want people to know that Hayden is remarkable. He is outgoing, friendly, fun, confident and resilient. Things have not always been easy for him and he has overcome many challenges. He has such a supportive family, friend group, school and community. He loves and appreciates everyone,” says Amy.
In June, Hayden will finish his time at Bellerose High School and with this will bring a new transition as he loves being one of the Bellerose Bulldogs.
“We will have to find a new routine for Hayden that brings him joy, purpose and connection. St. Albert is a great community, and I know we will find opportunities for Hayden to be engaged, contribute and feel valued,” she adds.
Responding to emergencies, putting out fires and ensuring residents feel safe comes with the job, but what people may not associate with being a member of the fire department is being part of the community.
“When you think of fire fighting, people think of putting water on fire, but it’s so much more than that. It comes down to working together as a team and giving back to your community and Hayden exemplifies those characteristics of what it means to be a fire fighter,” adds Damien. “Hayden’s time with us has increased comradery and really brought home the importance of the work we do.”
