Off-Leash Areas: Keep Them Comfortable for All
St. Albert is fortunate to have many spaces for dog owners to get outside with their pups, which includes two designated dog parks, and a variety of off-leash sites and outdoor boarded rinks.
The City’s two fully-fenced off-leash dog parks include Lacombe Lake Dog Park (which has a small dog area) and Dodger Dog Park. You heard that right! Dodger Dog Park is now fully-fenced. Other upgrades include the addition of boardwalks over wetland areas and new crossing locations for easy and safe access.
These off-leash areas are treasured by many in the community and each of them is an oasis for dogs and their owners to meet, exercise and socialize. On any given day, you can see these areas bustling with activity, and that could also include those without dogs enjoying a bike ride, run, playground fun and more. Every dog and their human(s) play an important role in ensuring St. Albert’s shared outdoor spaces are comfortable for all.
The City regularly educates the public on responsible dog ownership by creating awareness through social media , with signage in off-leash areas, enforcing the Animal Bylaw through Municipal Enforcement Services, and other measures. Keeping St. Albert’s beautiful parks and trails enjoyable for all starts with everyone working together to be stewards of these valued areas.
Being a responsible dog owner means not only taking care of your pet’s health and well-being, but also by following City guidelines and being respectful of others in our community. We’ve highlighted some key details below that are important to know before you venture out with your pup!
Animal Bylaw Regulations
Remember to always follow these regulations outlined in the Animal Bylaw 11/2013:
- St. Albert is an on-leash community, unless in one of the City’s two dog parks or designated off-leash areas. This means all dogs must be leashed on or within one metre of trails, including when a trail cuts through an off-leash area. Owners or walkers must always carry a leash, even in off-leash areas.
- Dogs are prohibited from being in playground areas even when on a leash.
- Dogs must always be under complete control, even when in an off-leash area. This means your dog’s recall must be good enough to prevent unwanted contact with other park users and dogs.
- Stop & scoop! Owners must pick up poop immediately and always carry a means of picking up after their dog. Carry multiple bags to make sure you always meet this requirement. This isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the law! Pet waste can carry worms and other parasites, which makes it dangerous to the health of children and other dogs.
- All areas are on-leash when organized sporting activities are taking place.
- All dogs over six months of age must be licensed with a maximum of three dogs per household.
Off-Leash Area Etiquette
- Some dogs are not ready for the excitement of off-leash areas. Make sure you know when your dog is becoming uncomfortable, overwhelmed or excited.
- Every individual and dog has their own unique personality and preferences for interacting with others. Only let your dog greet a stranger if they ask. The same rule applies if you see another dog and caretaker approaching; ask first and respect the other’s response.
- Remember that not everyone is comfortable around dogs. To avoid unwanted contact, keep off-leash activities strictly inside the designated areas.

On our website you can learn about the three different types of off-leash areas — dog parks, sites and boarded rinks— and view a collection of maps that show the individual off-leash area boundaries. A quick reminder that when entering or leaving the boundaries of an off-leash area, all dogs must be on a leash.
We also have a handy overview map that shows every location in the City, which you can view, download or print. Depending on where you live, there might be one within walking distance of your home!
