Partners in Parks Spruce Up St. Albert!

Each year from April to October, Spruce Up St. Albert offers residents, schools and community groups a variety of opportunities to get involved in keeping our community clean and green.

Volunteering is a great way to explore new interests, learn new skills and make new friends. Projects like maintaining flowerbeds, gardens, schoolyards and open green spaces create a positive change for the community and a sense of civic pride.

This year marks the 31st anniversary of the City of St. Albert’s Partners in Parks program. During this time many community members have generously donated their time to spruce up our community. We’d like to introduce you to one of our dedicated volunteers.

Linda Cook is a resident of St. Albert living in Deer Ridge and has been part of the Partners in Parks program for the last 5 years.

Many planted flowers on a cul-de-sac boulevard

What made you first get involved with this program?

We live across from the flower bed and wanted to see something nicer than a plot of empty land and read about the Partners in Parks in the St. Albert Gazette.

What motivates you to volunteer?

Someone needed to do it, and we had the time.

What advice would you give to a new volunteer?

Don’t expect miracles in the first season. Our bed is in an extremely sunny and dry location, and we had to learn which plants are suitable for those conditions. Make sure you have access to water and look out for the bunnies!

How long have you been involved with the Partners in Parks program?

At least five years, we’re getting old, and our memories are going.

What kinds of Partner in Parks activities have you done in the past?

No other activities.... yet.

What accomplishment are you most proud of as a Partner in Parks volunteer?

The other neighbours seem to like what we do.  And it is satisfying to see things grow.
