Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Jocelyn Gould, and I'm a jazz guitarist originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba. I didn't start playing guitar until I was in university, but then I really took to it, and ended up pursuing a master’s degree in jazz from Michigan State University, where I met a lot of friends and colleagues that I still play with often. I lived in New York City for a while, then Toronto, and eventually ended up being on the road so much that I decided to move back to Winnipeg, where I am based now. I spend most of my time touring, recording, and writing music, but I also love spending time at home with my cats and going for hikes!

How would you describe your style of music?

I like all kinds of music, but I'm especially inspired by the jazz guitar greats like Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, and Joe Pass. I would probably describe my music as straight-ahead jazz, with a lot of swing and blues!

What has been your biggest career highlight so far?

Winning the 2021 JUNO Award for Jazz Album of the Year was of course a big highlight! But I have also had so many amazing experiences on tour. It's amazing to be able to travel around the world doing what I love and meeting new people. It was interesting getting to travel to Saudi Arabia to perform, something not many people have the opportunity to do. I'm also really looking forward to my first tour of Japan this summer!

Have you ever played The Arden Theatre before? If so, what was your experience, and do you have any memories to share? If not, what excites you about performing in St. Albert this summer?

I have not played at the Arden Theatre! The closest I have been is Edmonton, where I've played at the Yardbird several times. So, I'm thrilled to be able to expand out of the city and play somewhere new!

What can the audience expect from your Arden Plaza Series show this summer?

We are going to play a bunch of music from my latest album, Portrait of Right Now, as well as some other of my favourite tunes. They can expect a fun and swinging night!
