Neighbourly Connections: The Power of Block Parties

Whether you live in a mature neighbourhood or a newly built home in St. Albert, you most likely invested in your community when you chose to put down your roots.

The power of community can be seen in many ways, and if you’re looking for a simple way to bring your neighbours together this year, hosting a Block Party or Play Street might just do the trick.

So, what makes a neighbourhood a great place to live, and what can you gain with a close-knit community? We interviewed fellow St. Albertan Zoë Mackie and dug into how hosting her community’s third annual Block Party has impacted her neighbours.

A Sense of Belonging

A community that prioritizes connection helps to build a network of people with a shared interest that creates a feeling of being welcomed and supported. Community means more than being on a first name-basis; it’s the feeling of being welcomed, appreciated, and supported. “The [block parties] bring the community together and the event gets everyone visiting and having fun. You meet new neighbours and it gives the kids a chance to all play together,” said Zoë.

Increased Trust and Safety

Neighbours who look out for one another create a natural surveillance system, fostering a safer environment and helping residents feel more secure in their community. From Zoë’s perspective, “the block parties create lines of communication between neighbours and between the board and owners/residents (within their condo). It’s an informal space for everyone to put faces to names, visit, and to get to know each other.”

Collective Support System

A tight-knit community offers help in times of need and showcases the power of collective support and empathy. Zoë’s recent Block Party provided an opportunity to expand the local support in her area, noting, “I met some new neighbors who moved in only weeks ago.”

Community Pride

Residents take pride in their community’s achievements, history and appearance. “It was also nice to hear positive feedback about some new trees that have been planted in our condo community within the last week,” said Mackie.

Zoë’s Tips for a Successful Block Party:

  1. Plan early: Try to fill out the online form three to four weeks prior to your event and get your invites out several weeks in advance.
  2. Gather fun summer activities for kids: Bubbles and chalk are always a hit!
  3. Pro tip: Always choose an activity bag available from the City for rental.
  4. Make a list: Divide and conquer with your neighbours where possible.
  5. Most importantly: Have FUN!
