Save Money and the Environment with a Rain Barrel

Do you know that old saying: 'April showers bring May flowers?' As spring has sprung upon us, we can look forward to chirping birds and blooming buds, but not without a few rainfalls first. As part of the City of St. Albert's ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, the City is partnering with LBH Building Centre to offer 500 rain barrels for sale to residents at $60 each on May 14, 2022.

What are rain barrels, and why are they of use to you? Well, let's find out.

A rain barrel is a container, usually made of plastic, used to catch rainwater that flows from your residential downspouts. Collecting and using rainwater is an easy and cost-effective method to maintain a healthy lawn and garden. Rain barrels are also an easy way to conserve water, one of our most precious resources, and protect the environment. Using rain barrels allows you to do your part in limiting water consumption and saving money by collecting runoff rainwater. So why should you use a rain barrel?

  1. Rain barrels provide you with FREE water, and who doesn't like free stuff? By using this free water source, you save money on your monthly water bill.
  2. When more residents use rain barrels for their outdoor watering needs, that means fewer residents are using treated drinking water for said outdoor needs. This reduction in treated drinking water for outdoor settings, in turn, reduces the demand on our water treatment facilities which aids the City's ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability.
  3. Speaking of treated water, using a rain barrel means that you, as a resident, are using soft and non-chlorinated rainwater instead of treated water for your outdoor watering needs. This use of soft water can stimulate the growth of your plants, improve the health of your plant soil and minimize soil erosion.
  4. Using a rain barrel is also a way that you can foster a better environment by improving the quality of our local water. Rain barrels help lower contaminants within our streams, elevate our local water quality and keep our natural waterways free of external pollutants.

The City has been actively pursuing its ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, and the use of rain barrels is a way for residents to do their part.

"It focuses on educating the community on water conservation and bringing awareness to the details of the Water Conservation Bylaw," says Payton Homeak, City of St. Albert Environmental Coordinator. "The City is committed to reducing water consumption and protecting water supplies. The municipal corporation and the community respect water resources by employing many conservation techniques to reduce the amount of potable water required for day-to-day living and the wastewater that requires treatment,"

The annual Rain Barrel Sale has been a crowd favourite for many years in the City of St. Albert.

"In previous years, we sold out of rain barrels on the day of the sale, so residents must come earlier to reserve one or two barrels as there is a limit of two per person. The Rain Barrel Sale was postponed for two years during the COVID-19 pandemic so we are expecting a busy sale on the day of," says Payton.

Thank you to the LBH Building Centre for being an ongoing partner in each year's Rain Barrel Sale. This year's event will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at the LBH Building Centre from 8:30 a.m. until supplies last.
