Walk Safely During Second Winter

Second winter has hit St. Albert with fresh piles of snow to shovel, and ice to keep on chipping away at. This can make for slippery conditions when out for a stroll, but there are ways to keep yourself and others safe as we wind down the winter months.

  1. Walk like a Penguin. Keep your feet pointed slightly outward, take short, shuffling steps, and walk slowly to maintain balance.

  1. Wear ice cleats. With all the freeze and thaw that has been happening over the past several months, it’s a good idea to invest in some ice cleats to ensure when you’re out and about, you’re staying on your feet. Stay alert for slippery patches especially near intersections and curbs.
  2. Maintain your sidewalks. No one likes going for a walk and not being able to keep going because a neighbour forgot to shovel or didn’t throw down any gravel or ice melt. Don’t be that neighbour. Make sure you remove any dangerous snow/ice conditions from your sidewalks along side and in front of your property within 48 hours of snow falling. If icy conditions are present, sand boxes are located throughout the City for you to access sand for use on your property.
  3. Point. Pause. Proceed. Be alert at intersections and always look for danger when crossing the street. Make eye contact with drivers before you cross the street and wear reflective clothing when walking in low light or poor weather conditions. Learn more pedestrian safety tips

With these tips in mind, you’ll be able to continue enjoying your walks throughout the community!

Happy winter walking!
