Be Water Aware

How water conscious is your household? Here’s five easy ways to improve your water awareness and put more money back in your budget.

  1. Sign up for MyCity and the City of St. Albert's Water Usage App
The Water Usage App allows you to set and track personalized water consumption thresholds so that you can be alerted when your household or business goes over your customized setting. Alerts are sent within 8-12 hours after the water meter is read and water usage exceeds the set threshold limit. Please note that the timing of an alert may vary and is subject to change.

  2. Catch Raindrops in a Rain Barrell
Did you know the City holds a Rain Barrel Sale every year in May? If you don’t have one already, rain barrels will be available to purchase for $70 each (including GST) on May 3 at 8:30 a.m. at the L.B.H Building Centre on 11 Riel Drive. Rain barrels are available on a first-come, first-served basis with a limit of two barrels per St. Albert resident.

  3. Be Water Aware with Your Lawn Care
Take up grasscycling and leave your grass clippings on the lawn as these are nutrient-rich and can act as a natural fertilizer. Keeping grass blades high will also slow evaporation of water from the lawn, reducing the frequency you need to water!

  4. Use Only the Water you Need
    • Seems simple but it works - have you considered the following choices?
    • Turning off the water while you brush your teeth.
    • Using the dishwasher or washer when you have a full load.
    • Filling the kettle just for your cup of tea.
    • Washing fruits/veggies in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap.
  5. Follow the Water Conservation Bylaw
When using municipally supplied water from a hose, pipe, sprinkler or permanent irrigation system do so only between the hours of 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. Watering in the early morning most reduces water loss due to evaporation and maximizes benefits to grass and other plants.
