RCMP - Caution Drivers After Long Weekend
St. Albert RCMP Traffic Services Unit conducted patrols this past long weekend, focusing on high risk drivers throughout the city. Shortly after 9:00pm Monday, August 7, 2023 an officer spotted 3 black sports cars driving very tight to each other and aggressively enter onto Villeneuve Road from the Jensen Lakes area. They accelerated at an alarming rate and were captured at speeds up to 119km/h in the posted 60km/h zone on Villeneuve Road, while maintaining mere inches between them.
The officer was able to intercept and pull over all three cars before they reached Ray Gibbon Drive. Two Audi’s and a BMW were each being driven by 18 year old males, residents of Edmonton and St Albert. All three passed Mandatory Alcohol Screening and received violation tickets for exceeding the maximum speed limit.
Moments later the same officer observed a Yamaha sport bike on Giroux Road accelerate up to 104km/h in the posted 60km/h maximum zone after leaving a stop light. The 29 year-old male motorcyclist, a resident of St. Albert, also passed the Mandatory Alcohol Screening and received a violation ticket for exceeding the posted speed limit.
The Alberta Traffic Safety plan priorities for August include motorcycles and aggressive drivers. Enforcement officers will continue to be patrolling the city to ensure the roadways remain safe for all. St. Albert RCMP remind motorists to drive safely, and obey all traffic laws, even when the weather is warm and roads are clear and dry. Corporal Curtis HARSULLA of the St Albert RCMP Traffic Unit states “The overall driving behaviour for the weekend was generally seen to be safe and reasonable, with a few poor choices made by a few folks who literally ended up on our radar.”
