RCMP Crime Prevention – Theft of Vehicle/Theft from Vehicles
February is Alberta Crime Prevention month for Theft of Motor Vehicle / Theft from Motor Vehicles. During the pandemic there has been a decrease in these types of crimes across Alberta (Mar-Dec 2020 compared to Mar-Dec 2019). Urban Alberta Detachment areas saw a 27% decrease in Theft from a Motor Vehicle and a 26% decrease in Theft of Motor Vehicles. Rural Alberta Detachment areas saw a 29% decrease in Theft from a Motor Vehicle and a 21% decrease in Theft of Motor Vehicle.
St. Albert RCMP reports a 6% decrease in Theft from Motor Vehicles but a 9% increase in Theft of Motor Vehicles (Jan-Dec 2020 compared to Jan-Dec 2019). The good news is St. Albert RCMP saw a 25% decrease in Theft of Motor Vehicle in January 2021 (9 occurrences) compared to January 2020 (12 occurrences).
Despite these positive numbers there is still room for improvement. St. Albert RCMP remind citizens to “Lock It” and follow #9PMRoutine:
- Lock vehicle/garage doors
- Remove all valuables from vehicle
- Use a steering wheel lock
- Remove garage door opener from vehicle
- Use vehicle tracking system
- Park in well-lit areas
- Never leave vehicles running with the keys inside
