RCMP charge youth electric dirtbike rider after collision

On Aug. 27, 2026, at approximately 1:45 p.m., officers from the St. Albert RCMP responded to a serious two-vehicle collision involving a Ford Bronco SUV and an Electric Dirtbike on Akins Drive, between Alpine Boulevard and Amherst Crescent. 

Police arrived to find a 16-year-old male with facial injuries sitting next to a damaged electric dirt bike. The Ford Bronco sustained significant damage to its passenger side including deployed airbags, crumpled doors and a shattered window. The youth, who was wearing a helmet, was transported to the Stollery Children’s Hospital via ambulance where he was treated for concerning injuries and has since been released.

Initial statements indicate that the Ford Bronco was travelling southbound on Akins Drive when the driver observed a sudden flash, then heard and felt an impact. The crash was loud enough to be heard inside nearby homes. The SUV driver stopped and located the injured rider lying on the ground nearby. A second youth was riding with the injured rider on another electric dirtbike but fled prior to police arrival.

Corporal Curtis HARSULLA of the St. Albert RCMP Traffic Section says, “Our detachment has received numerous ongoing complaints regarding electric dirtbikes (and other micromobility vehicles) since early spring. We have been and will continue to conduct numerous focused enforcement and education operations to interdict these riders, yet they continue to be seen across the city. The young rider in this case is very lucky his injuries weren’t worse.” Cpl. Harsulla also states, “ These are not e-bikes. They don’t have pedals and they travel at much higher and dangerous speeds.”

The youth (who cannot be named) faces violation tickets totalling nearly $1400 in fines as a result of the collision investigation.

RCMP would like to remind the public that the use of electric dirtbikes within St Albert, and any public roadway in Alberta is illegal and dangerous. The majority of the riders encountered by RCMP is youth. Parents and Riders both risk substantial fines, the seizure of the bike and could face Criminal Charges. Please take steps to ensure these cannot be ridden in the city for the safety of all residents.
