RCMP - Crime Stoppers - Bike Safety Reminder

With the warm weather upon us, St. Albert RCMP are reminding citizens to pay attention to bike safety and rules of the road.

St. Albert has many trails within the city and cyclists are encouraged to use the trail system.  Cyclists who choose to ride their bikes on the roadways must follow the rules of the road.  Cyclists have all the same rights and responsibilities as a driver of a motor vehicle and must obey the same rules when travelling the road.  Cyclists must yield to pedestrians, stop for stop signs/red lights, and travel with the flow of traffic.  If you are riding a bicycle, you are considered by law, a vehicle on the road.

There are a large number of cyclists who choose to ride their bicycles on the sidewalk, which is permitted - St. Albert By-Law 41(1) but while riding on the sidewalk, cyclists must yield the right of way to Pedestrians and cannot operate their bike in a reckless manner - St. Albert By-Law 41(2).  Cyclists on sidewalks must dismount & walk across roadways/intersections.  If you dismount and walk alongside your bicycle, you are considered a pedestrian and have the same rights as a pedestrian.  Cyclists on sidewalks do not have the right-of-way over motor vehicles in intersections.

All individuals who ride their bike within the City of St. Albert are required to wear a bike helmet, this includes adults and children - St. Albert Traffic By-Law 41(3).  "Head injury is the leading cause of death from bicycle crashes.  Cyclists who do not wear helmets are three times more likely to suffer head injuries in a crash," says St. Albert Traffic Cpl. Tim Gaultois.

If anyone has information regarding any crime, they are asked to contact the St. Albert RCMP Detachment at 780-458-7700 or their local police.  If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the "P3 Tips" app available through the Apple App or Google Play
