RCMP - Patrol Trails and Parks for Dangerous Users
Over this past weekend, the St. Albert RCMP hit the City’s trails in response to an increasing number of complaints regarding e-bikes, electric dirt bikes, and other modes of micro transportation.
Over the late afternoon/evenings of the July 18 weekend, many residents who were out enjoying the hot weather were surprised to see members of the St. Albert RCMP patrolling the trails in an unusual manner. Mounties on golf carts travelled the paths, sidewalks, and parks of St. Albert to focus on any users riding in an unsafe manner. During the combined 10 hours of patrols, officers observed only one rider operating unsafely. This occurred when an electric dirt bike was spotted stunting across a schoolyard, then departed down the trails at a high rate of speed. That investigation continues.
While interacting with trail users:
- 2 electric dirt bikes were encountered. These are considered Off-Highway Vehicles and are not allowed in St. Albert. One was removed from the trails and the other is still under investigation.
- Approx $2000 in over 10 violations/warnings were issued – ranging from open liquor in public, failing to wear bicycle helmets, to driving an uninsured and unregistered Off-Highway Vehicle in public.
- 23 leaflets (attached) were handed out to trail users, explaining the requirements of each mode of transportation
- 32 positive tickets were handed out to trail users observed to be following the rules (wearing helmets, riding respectfully, etc)
Corporal Curtis HARSULLA says, “ Since late spring, residents have voiced numerous concerns over e-bikes, e-scooters and electric dirt bikes being driven dangerously around the City. We will continue to be out patrolling in various ways to keep the City’s roads and trails safe for all to use, while rewarding those that are following the rules.”
