Council Approves 2024-25 Advocacy Priorities
At the September 17, 2024 City Council Meeting, St. Albert City Council approved their 2024-25 Advocacy Priorities.
Council’s Advocacy Priorities are initiatives that are impacted by or rely on decisions of other orders of government. For example, funding from the provincial and federal governments is needed in order to support the development of affordable housing projects. Council reviews these priorities annually to ensure they reflect the most up-to-date needs of St. Albert.
Eight total Advocacy Priorities have been approved, including two that Council has identified as their top Advocacy Priorities. Council’s Advocacy Priorities are available on the following webpage: stalbert.ca/cosa/leadership/advocacy
Council identified the following initiatives as their top Advocacy Priorities:
Lakeview Business District Servicing
- Funding is provided to support the development of the strategically located Lakeview Business District that will stimulate economic diversification and job creation.
Advance Mixed Market Housing Development
- Appropriate and accessible housing options that meet the needs of residents within St. Albert are available.
- The number of people spending more than 30 per cent of their income on housing decreases, and there are more subsidized and affordable housing options for low-to-moderate-income households.
Although all of Council’s Advocacy Priorities will be worked on, Council’s top Advocacy Priorities will be more foundational in messaging and will be prioritized in the City’s engagements with other orders of government.
“A collaborative relationship with the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada is essential to ensure all orders of government can address the needs of our citizens,” says St. Albert Mayor Cathy Heron. “St. Albert’s Advocacy Priorities are a guide for these relationships to bring results to St. Albert.”
