City and St. Albert RCMP Launch Next Generation 9-1-1 System

As of November 17, 2025, the Emergency Communications Centre for the St. Albert RCMP at Maloney Place (96 Boudreau Road) transitioned to the Next-Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) system providing first responders with more detailed and accurate caller locations.

This work is a testament to the partnership and collaboration between the City of St. Albert and the RCMP as we work towards upgrading technology together and continuing to ensure the safety of our residents.

NG9-1-1 technology is a new and improved 9-1-1 service that will bring new safety features to emergency calls.

Callers do not need to do anything different when they request assistance in an emergency. If help is needed, immediately dial 9-1-1 to connect with an emergency dispatcher.

Behind the scenes, NG9-1-1 provides dispatchers with more accurate data to determine the caller’s location.

Previously, when calling 911 on a cellphone, a caller’s location relied on their distance to the closest cell tower and a triangulation of their location which gave a location 10 to 50 kilometres from where they actually were. The new NG9-1-1 system is based on the location of the cellphone itself and can determine exactly where the caller is in the community.

The City looks forward to launching new features of NG9-1-1 such as real-time texting, data, photo and video messaging in the coming years based on the timeline set by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.

Work is currently underway towards implementing the system for St. Albert Fire Services in early 2026.
