City of St. Albert and Mutual Aid Partners Combat Fire Update: May 7 At 01:47 Hours
Citadel Mews West Continuing Care Facility Fire
Further to the news release dated May 6, 2021, St. Albert Fire Services, in collaboration with mutual aid partner fire services from Morinville, Spruce Grove, Strathcona County and Edmonton, continue to combat a large structure fire at Citadel Mews West Continuing Care Facility at 15 Erin Ridge Road in St. Albert. Thankfully, no fatalities have been reported.
As a precaution, residents and staff from the adjoining building, Citadel Mews East, have also been evacuated via St. Albert Transit to a local hotel. Regular care residents are being accommodated in hotel rooms, while long-term care residents are being hosted in a large banquet room until more suitable accommodation is found for them.
There is extensive fire, smoke and water damage to the west building. The fire wall held and saved the east building, which experienced only minor smoke damage. We do not yet have a cost estimate of the full extent of the damage. The cause of the fire is unknown and fire fighting efforts continue to ensure hot spots are addressed. An investigation will be conducted when it is safe to do so.
The City appreciates the generous donations of supplies contributed by residents and local businesses, who have provided enough resources to address residents’ immediate needs. No further donations are required at this time.
The City is continuing to ask concerned residents to stay away from the scene and to give first responders time and space to do their vital work. The City appreciates the courageous efforts of first responders, the generous support of residents and local businesses, and the invaluable support of our mutual aid partners. Our thoughts continue to be with the residents, staff and their families.
