City of St. Albert And Mutual Aid Partners Combat Fire
Citadel Mews West Continuing Care Facility Fire displaces residents
On May 6, 2021, St. Albert Fire Services, with the support of mutual aid partner fire services from Morinville, Spruce Grove, Strathcona and Edmonton, worked together to combat a large structure fire at Citadel Mews West Continuing Care Facility at 15 Erin Ridge Road in St. Albert. Continuing care residents and independent living residents have been evacuated. Three residents have been transported to hospital.
The high wind is challenging for firefighters but has so far not affected nearby buildings. We do not yet have an estimate of damage. Some businesses on the main level of the building have also been impacted by the fire.
Calls to 911 were received at approximately 1952 hours. Fire crews were dispatched at that time and arrived at Citadel Mews shortly thereafter. Platoon Chief Dardis of St. Albert Fire Services is the incident commander on site. All three stations in St. Albert responded. The total response includes fire fighters and engines from: St. Albert, Morinville, Spruce Grove, Edmonton and Strathcona
All residents and staff were safely evacuated via St. Albert Transit and transported to a local hotel. All residents were welcomed and registered by St. Albert Emergency Support Service (ESS) staff and volunteers at the hotel. Staff from Alberta Health Services (AHS) are supporting the evacuees with their medication needs. AHS staff are also determining if alternative accommodation will be required. Some families picked up their loved ones from Citadel Mews during the evacuation.
The cause of the fire is unknown and fire fighting efforts continue.
Barricades and crowd control are in place at the scene.
The City is asking concerned residents to stay away from the scene and to give first responders time and space to do their vital work. Our thoughts are with the residents, staff and families.
