City of St. Albert Annexation Approved
The City of St. Albert’s application to annex 1558 hectares (3850 acres) of land from Sturgeon County was approved by the Provincial Government through an Order in Council on December 8, 2021.
Four years of collaborative partnership and negotiation between the two parties led to the City’s annexation application submission in December 2020. The Land and Property Rights Tribunal held its public hearing in April 2021 and made its recommendation to Cabinet this month.
On behalf of the City of St. Albert, I extend my appreciation to everyone who supported the annexation process over the past few years. St. Albert’s Council and staff worked closely with Sturgeon County’s Council and staff to achieve this mutually beneficial outcome. I look forward to welcoming our new residents on January 1, 2022 and to ongoing collaboration with our neighbours to the north.
Mayor Cathy Heron, City of St. Albert
I am pleased that we are finally at the end of a long process. The successful completion of this annexation is because of the hard work and cooperation between the City of St. Albert and Sturgeon County, and I thank everyone in both municipalities for their time and effort. To our soon to be former residents: though you will no longer be an official part of Sturgeon County, we will always value you as our friends and neighbours and as part of our community's rich history.
Mayor Alanna Hnatiw, Sturgeon County
The City of St. Albert continues preparing for the transition of jurisdiction, which takes effect January 1, 2022. Affected residents can find helpful information regarding transitioning from the County to the City on the City’s website at stalbert.ca/annexation.
