City of St. Albert and Sturgeon County Hold Meeting of Joint Intermunicipal Affairs Committee (IAC)
Meeting held June 27, 2018
The City of St. Albert and Sturgeon County’s joint Intermunicipal Affairs Committee (IAC), consisting of all members of both municipal Councils, held a regularly scheduled meeting on June 27, 2018 to discuss matters of mutual interest.
At the meeting, Sturgeon County General Manager Collin Steffes gave a verbal update on the Sturgeon Valley Special Study Area, being led by Sturgeon County and supported by the City of Edmonton and City of St. Albert as part of implementing the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Growth Plan. The IAC also reinstated a sub-committee of the IAC, called the Joint Opportunities Task Force, to develop a workplan to address intermunicipal opportunities for items like Villeneuve Airport and Ray Gibbon Drive advocacy, to be brought back to the IAC for approval in the Fall.
The IAC also approved a Project Charter to begin undertaking the establishment of a Recreation Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework. This work will be overseen by a separate sub-committee of the IAC.
The IAC went in camera to receive an update on ongoing annexation negotiations, which formally started on December 6, 2017. The Annexation Committee, as a subset of the IAC, next meets on September 19, 2018. The City is planning the first Annexation Open House, which will likely occur later this year.
This was the second meeting of the two Councils, since the October 2017 municipal election.
“It is important that we continue to work closely together; we are stronger together especially in areas like advocacy for common priorities like improved infrastructure, efficient services, and land use planning initiatives. Our shared commitment will provide lasting benefits to the residents of Sturgeon County and the City of St. Albert,” says Sturgeon County Mayor, Alanna Hnatiw.
“Our two municipalities continue to explore new ways to collaborate,” says Mayor Cathy Heron. “Undertaking the Recreational Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework provides another opportunity for our communities to further develop our strong relationship.”
The next meeting of the IAC is scheduled to take place on October 31, 2018
