City of St. Albert Releases Statement on Off-Duty Behaviour of City Employee

Statement from CAO Kevin Scoble

A news article was released on September 25, 2019 discussing the off-duty behaviour at an event, not associated with the City, but nonetheless involving a City employee. These actions were racially insensitive and not consistent with the culture of the City of St. Albert (COSA) and the values we hold. The employee has taken accountability for the mistake and is working to make amends, which is a positive step moving forward.

While the individual situation and the consequences of the actions will not be publicly discussed, as they are a personnel matter, the City is using the situation as an opportunity to educate staff on the importance of reflecting on their own actions, beliefs and experiences. Staff are being asked to reflect on our culture and values and what they mean to them. Staff are further encouraged to incorporate those values into their decisions and behaviors in the workplace and when off duty.

The City and its staff operate in a professional environment where we conduct our work together and for our citizens in a respectful, honest and accountable way. Staff have made and continue to make considerable effort in supporting diversity in the community. We do this through supporting Council proclamations, implementing and following policies/directives, hosting and attending events, and every day in service delivery to residents/patrons.

Working for COSA means we care about each other, our residents and community visitors. We approach our work with consideration to what we do and how we do it, and how we are viewed by the public in performing our work. The City remains committed to embracing diversity and ensuring that everyone is valued and welcomed in St. Albert.
