Council Approves Grandin Renaming Recommendation

At the March 18, 2025, Council Meeting, Council approved a recommendation to remove the name Grandin from the neighbourhood and all municipal assets and to replace it with a new name effective September 1, 2025.

The neighbourhood of Grandin will be renamed The Gardens, and the name Grandin will be replaced with the name Garden on all municipal assets.

The municipal assets in question are:

  • Grandin Road
  • Grandin Lane
  • Grandin Place
  • Grandin Clubhouse
  • Grandin Nature Park
  • Grandin Ravine

The recommendation was based on the Municipal Naming Policy (C-CC-05) and input from community members.

Residents who live on Grandin Road, Grandin Lane or Grandin Place do not need to take any action at this time. The name change does not take effect until September 1, 2025. Residents whose addresses are changing will receive a letter from both Canada Post and the City of St. Albert, which will provide them with instructions at that time.

In 2024, the City received a request to remove the name Grandin, which met the required criteria outlined in the Municipal Naming Policy. Administration followed the process outlined in the policy to prepare a recommendation for Council’s consideration regarding the potential name change.

As part of this work, the City asked residents of St. Albert to suggest new names to potentially replace the name Grandin. Suggestions that aligned with the criteria outlined in the Municipal Naming Policy informed the recommendation report.
