Information for Candidates for the 2021 Municipal Election
The City of St. Albert is preparing for the 2021 Municipal Election. The offices available are Mayor, Councillor, Public School Trustee and Catholic School Trustee.
Information for voters and potential candidates will be available on the City’s website at stalbert.ca/election on an ongoing basis between now and Election Day on October 18, 2021.
Candidates will be provided with information on the City website, through online candidate information packages, and through a Virtual Candidate Information Session (via Zoom on March 3 from 12 to 1 p.m.). Candidates who wish to attend the information session via Zoom must send an email to email@example.com by 12 p.m. on March 2, 2021 to register. The session will be livestreamed via the City’s YouTube channel (YouTube.com/CityofStAlbert). If candidates wish to watch the session in this manner, they will have to submit their questions ahead of time via email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Election Office will be conducting an expanded Advance Vote in 2021 and will provide for Special Ballots and Institutional Voting opportunities. Details of the dates, times and locations of these additional voting opportunities will be provided closer to Election Day.
New for 2021, recent amendments to the Local Authorities Election Act include rules governing the finances and accountability of third parties that intend to engage in election advertising. Third parties that intend to engage in election advertising are required to register with the City of St. Albert. The Returning Officer will receive each candidate’s nomination form between January 1, 2021 and 12:00 p.m. on September 20, 2021. Nomination papers may be submitted by using the secure drop box beside the front entry doors of St. Albert Place, or by mail/courier to the City of St. Albert. To submit your papers via mail/courier, please send them to the following mailing address: St. Albert Place, c/o Elections Office, 5 St. Anne Street, St. Albert, Alberta T8N 3Z9. No emails or faxes will be accepted.
Candidates are required to obtain five signatures on their Nomination Paper. They have until 12 p.m. on September 21 to formally withdraw their nomination. A withdrawal will be accepted unless the withdrawal results in a situation where there are fewer candidates than positions to be filled.
