Jarome Iginla Arena Naming
Celebrating our Hometown Hockey Hero!
The City of St. Albert is renaming the Akinsdale Arena to the Jarome Iginla Arena.
Jarome Iginla, known to fans as Iggy, grew up in St. Albert and got his start in hockey playing for the St. Albert Eagle Raiders minor hockey team. In 1995, he was drafted to the NHL and played much of his 23-season career as the captain of the Calgary Flames.
Iginla was an All-Star player and Lester B. Pearson award recipient. He played 1,554 games, scored over 1,300 points, and helped earn Canada a World Cup and two Olympic gold medals.
Mayor Cathy Heron and members of Council will be in attendance, as will Jarome Iginla, his friends and family.
Residents and members of the media are invited to attend the event and take photos and video footage.
