Council Thrilled with Ray Gibbon Drive Announcement
Province Commits to Cost-sharing Agreement with City to Twin Road
St. Albert City Council is thrilled that the Government of Alberta has agreed to partner with the City of St. Albert to share the costs of twinning Ray Gibbon Drive.
“During the election campaign, Council clearly heard from residents, businesses and other stakeholders how important is was for us to improve Ray Gibbon Drive,” says St. Albert Mayor Cathy Heron. “This project has been one of Council’s top priorities during our term and today’s announcement is wonderful news for our City and our region.”
The construction project is expected to generate employment and serve as a catalyst for economic development. Once the work is complete, Ray Gibbon Drive will significantly improve the City’s transportation network, which is one of the priorities in Council’s Strategic Plan.
As part of the City’s 2019-2021 Business Plan and 2019 Budget, Council had approved funds for the initial design work, which is expected to get underway this year. With the cost-sharing agreement now in place with the Province, construction will get underway next year. The work will be completed in four phases, over a 10-year period, starting at the south end of Ray Gibbon Drive. The City will be responsible for managing the entire project.
