St. Albert and Sturgeon County Hold Joint Intermunicipal Affairs Committee Meeting
Meeting held February 28, 2018
The City of St. Albert and Sturgeon County’s joint Intermunicipal Affairs Committee (IAC), consisting of all members of both municipal Councils, held a regularly scheduled meeting on February 28, 2018 to discuss matters of mutual interest.
At the meeting, St. Albert City Manager Kevin Scoble gave an overview of the IAC framework to provide new members of the two Councils with a better understanding of the IAC’s purpose and activities. Members of the IAC also received a verbal update on the Sturgeon Valley Special Study Area, being led by Sturgeon County and supported by the City of Edmonton and City of St. Albert as part of implementing the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Growth Plan.
The IAC went in camera to receive an update on ongoing annexation negotiations, which formally started on December 6, 2017. The Annexation Committee, as a subset of the IAC, meets next on March 7. Landowner notification letters were mailed to affected County landowners this week. All annexation discussions occur in private.
This was the inaugural meeting of the two Councils, since the October 2017 municipal election.
“Regular meetings of our two Councils enable us to collaborate on short and long-term land-use planning initiatives while also considering other inter-municipal matters, like advocacy and economic development,” says Alanna Hnatiw, Mayor of Sturgeon County.
“The IAC continues to be a valuable mechanism for our two municipalities to communicate and work together in mutually beneficial ways,” says Mayor Cathy Heron.
The next meeting of the IAC is scheduled to take place on June 27, 2018
