Licence Exemptions

Provincial legislation and regulations allow for certain professions, trades, or non-profit organizations to be exempt from municipal licensing fees.

Exemption Criteria

To receive an exemption from the licensing fee, business owners must complete the following:

  1. Obtain a St. Albert business licence by applying for a business licence, selecting "Exempt" as the licence type,
  2. Provide proof of exemption by attaching a regulated practice permit, official tradesperson card, or societies article during the application process.

Please note:

  • Proof of exemption will be accepted at the discretion of the Business Licence Inspector.
  • Businesses that fall under this exemption policy are still required to obtain a Business Licence as per Business Licence Bylaw 43/2000.

Further information regarding which trades and professions can qualify for exemptions can be found in the following document:

Non-Profit Organizations

A Non-Profit organization wishing to be exempted from the requirements of a licence fee can apply to the Licence Inspector for such an exemption.

Non-Profit Organizations must submit a Business Licence Application in addition to providing a copy of their Provincial Registration Certificate under the Alberta Companies Act, Societies Act, or the Canada Corporations Act
